Dog Waste Bins

The problem of Dog fouling has concerned Loughton Parish Council for some time, and after discussions with Milton Keynes Council in late 1999 the Parish Council initiated a twelve month trial of Dog Waste Bins in the Great Holm ward. This included notices warning dog owners of their responsibility to clean up after their dogs.

The trial, which started in May 2000 with a small number of bins, was to assess the acceptance of the bins by the residents and for the Parish Council to gain information about the required frequency of emptying.

These bins were located at the following places:

2 bins in Kensington Drive:

2 bins around Lodge Lake

Emptying Problems

Originally a weekly bin emptying program was agreed with MK Council but was found to be inadequate and was altered initially to twice a week and later to 3 times a week. There was also some confusion by the contractor which caused some bins not to be emptied for weeks on end.

Vandalism.

The two bins around Lodge Lake suffered from vandalism, the one in the car-park was stolen and the other one was destroyed by fire.

Completion of Trial

In May 2001, it was agreed that in spite of the vandalism and the initial emptying problems, the scheme had been successful in cleaning up the dog mess, which was especially noticeable around Lodge Lake. It was therefore decided to extended the scheme to 7 new Waste Bins in the Loughton grid square, and 4 additional bins, including two new larger sized replacements for the vandalized bins in Great Holm grid square.

In the course of discussions it was found that the Parish Council could order direct from the suppliers at about half the price of the originally supplied MK Council ones and Parish Councillors agreed to fit the bins.

The seven new bins in the Loughton Grid Square were installed at the following locations:

Linslade Grove

Ashpole Furlong

Leys Road

Redland Drive (Loughton East)

London Road

The new bins in Great Holm Grid Square were installed at the following locations:

Kensington Drive

Lodge Lake (Replacement of Vandalized bins)

(One of the new bins remains to be allocated)

Feedback

The siting of the Dog Waste Bins in the Parish has been considered by the Parish Council as the most suitable to alleviate Dog Fouling problems. However the Parish Council would welcome any feedback from parishioners to help identify sites for additional bins or to move bins to a more suitable location.

If you have any comments regarding the location of the bins please contact the Parish Clerk or any of the Loughton Parish Councillors
